Serve Our Cathedral Community

Our lay team allows both the clergy and the congregation to worship fully during our services.

Opportunities to Serve

Worship Ministries

  • Lector

Lectors make the Word of God and Prayers of the People come alive as they read the Holy Scriptures clearly and reverently. As trained liturgical readers, lectors are called upon to be prepared and knowledgeable leaders of the liturgy.

  • Acolyte

Acolytes assist with liturgical processions as crucifers and torch-bearers and with the distribution of Holy Communion as eucharistic ministers. Annual training takes place to acquaint new acolytes and refresh the memories of seasoned ones. Acolytes take part in all weddings, funerals, Sunday celebrations of Holy Eucharist, and festival liturgical occasions.

  • Verger

Vergers assist with the coordination of liturgical processions and liaise with families present for baptisms and burials. In other settings, they might be called “masters of ceremonies.”

  • Usher

Ushers greet and seat worshippers in the Spirit of Christ. Their attention to detail and knowledge of cathedral logistics are indispensable to Saint John’s many meaningful liturgical experiences.

  • AV Volunteer

AV volunteers use their training to ensure high and consistent quality to our live-streamed services and formation offerings. No video or audio production experience is necessary; training is provided.

  • Altar Guild

Members of the cathedral altar guild prepare the altar, candles, linens, and other physical materials for the celebration of Holy Eucharist and observance of daily prayer. This ministry of care extends to all of the cathedral’s diocesan and festival liturgies and includes the cathedral flower team.

  • Flower Guild

The flower team chooses and arranges flowers for Sunday liturgies, weddings, funerals, and other occasions. This team enables the cathedral community to worship God in the beauty of holiness.

Pastoral Care

  • Eucharistic Visitor

Our trained lay Eucharistic Visitors provide the sacrament of Holy Communion to those who are hospitalized, homebound, or in nursing homes. Those engaged in this ministry must be licensed by the bishop and undergo a diocesan training session before any visitation is done.

  • The Wilderness Planning

Members from the Wilderness community meet regularly to plan upcoming seasons and prayer stations. Many also arrive early on Sunday evenings to help set up prayer stations for the service.

  • Sparklers

This group plans all of our celebrations and receptions. From elevated coffee hours to welcome parties and so much more, this group offers their gifts and talents to celebrate the many wonderful parts of our life together.

  • Cathedral Cooks

This group plans all of our celebrations and receptions. From elevated coffee hours to welcome parties and so much more, this group offers their gifts and talents to celebrate the many wonderful parts of our life together.

  • Dean's Forum Hosts

This team of parishioners is integral to supporting the Dean’s Forum and other formational offerings during the program year.

  • Gardeners

Getting our hands dirty and connecting with the earth around us is a wonderful way to engage with the sacredness of creation. The Gardeners regularly plant, water, weed, and care for the gardens around Saint John’s Campus.

  • Saint Francis Apartments Volunteers and Cooks

Just across the street from the cathedral, Saint Francis Apartments (SFA) offers several volunteer opportunities for people who want to get to know our neighbors transitioning out of homelessness. You can help cook a monthly meal, drive residents to appointments, teach a workshop, help host a birthday party and more to build community with residents.

Serve on a Church Ministry Team

Youth Ministry Team

The youth ministry team meets quarterly to assess vision, formation programming, and community building events. We also try our best to ensure that our youth are integrated into the overall life of Saint John’s.

Family Ministry Team

This team is a committee of parents who meet regularly to plan, develop, and assess children’s ministry, formation, and family social gatherings.
