From the Sacristan: All Souls & Pre-planning
Each year, as we gather for the All Souls Requiem, we pause to remember those who have died and commend them to the loving care of God. Through prayer, Scripture, and sacred music, we honor the lives of those we have loved and lost, while finding comfort in the promise of resurrection and the hope of eternal life.
This sacred observance also invites us to reflect on our own lives and the legacy we hope to leave behind. While conversations about death and funeral planning can feel difficult, making arrangements in advance can be a meaningful act of care for those we love. Preplanning your funeral allows you to express your wishes, choose the readings and music that speak to your faith, and ensure that your service reflects the life you have lived. It also relieves family members of some of the uncertainty and decision-making that can accompany a time of grief.
Saint John’s Cathedral offers opportunities to begin these conversations, whether you are interested in preplanning your funeral service or exploring the possibility of securing a resting place in our columbarium. The columbarium is a great way to continue your legacy here at Saint John’s Cathedral.
As we remember those who have gone before us, may we also find the courage to prepare thoughtfully for the future. If you are interested in pre-planning a funeral, I welcome the opportunity to speak with you, answer your questions, and help you explore the options available — please contact me at mason@sjcathedral.org.
