As Director of Music, Michael oversees all music at Saint John’s Cathedral at all liturgies on Sundays, including for The Wilderness, in collaboration with other musicians, as well as choral and instrumental conducting. In coordination with the Canon Precentor, Michael works to establish appropriate music and liturgical ethos, and time for weekly Cathedral liturgies including Wednesday evening Eucharists, Sunday Eucharists and Evensong, and Office of the Bishop liturgies like regional confirmations and diocesan-wide festal and patronal observances. Michael also develops the cathedral choirs, defining the composition and purpose of each choir, regularly recruiting musically qualified choir members for children, youth, and adult choirs, and teaching choir members new elements to enhance their musical understanding.
“I am delighted to be the Director of Music at Saint John’s Cathedral where I have the privilege of working with some of the best clergy, staff, and musicians in the Episcopal Church. I was drawn to the Cathedral’s rich musical and liturgical tradition as well as the community’s deep spirituality. I see myself as being more than an employee but a member of a loving, caring, life-giving community.”
