Small Groups

Making Our Big Community Smaller

In response to God’s abundant love we strive to share and build love beyond Sunday Worship. Small groups connect us as we journey in lives of faith together. They help make our large cathedral feel a little smaller and unite our community across services.

Below are groups that are currently meeting, which include descriptions and group coordinators. Please contact the Rev. Amy Newell-Large, Curate for Parish Life, at if you wish to join a group listed below or if you would like to start a small group.

Anti-Racist Team

Saint John’s is committed to our Christian ethos of love and justice lived in daily life. We value equity and inclusion in our personal lives, our church community, our Denver community and beyond. As part of our efforts to live with these values we are working towards the creation of an Anti-Racist Team. This team will collaborate with area churches to build deep relationships with our neighbors and give strength to this work.

Coordinator: Susan Ritter
When: TBD; please come to the formational meeting July 9, 2023

Wednesday Book Group

Sunday Book Group

All of what we read, learn, and reflect upon opens us to grow together and grow in God. This group has met for many years and covers a wide range of books, including Death Comes for the Archbishop, Hidden Figures, and Between the World and Me. For the group’s 2023 reading list, click here.

Coordinator: Diane Neumann
When: Every second Sunday of the month at Saint John’s, during the summer months, June – August, the group will meet at 9:15 am.

Centering Prayer

Contemplative prayer is a rich element of our Christian tradition. Finding God in stillness and in community deepens our spiritual lives for the work we do. All are welcome for Centering Prayer on Mondays. Join at 5:20 pm for a brief check-in, then we begin at 5:30 with calming music, opening prayer, 20 minutes of silence, and closing prayer.

Be still and know that I am God… – Psalm 46:10

Daughters of the King

40s & 50s Group

Our shared life experiences at this stage in life bring us together to socialize and connect with one another. This group is intentionally social and spiritual in nature, offering spaces to reflect on faith in this stage of life, as well as enjoy the camaraderie of Saint John’s 40s & 50s community.

Coordinator: Rev. Amy Newell-Large

Green Team

When: TBD for the program year 2023-2024, please reach out to Amy to be added to the email list for updates.

Joyful Feasting

A monthly gathering inspired by Jesus’ invitation to nourish community. We realize that many of our fellowship offerings are age-specific, gender-specific, or geared towards families. Joyful Feasting is an opportunity for cathedral members to gather beyond these affiliations, in particular those who may not have friends and family nearby, or those looking to build community.

Coordinator: Sheryl Martin
When: First Sunday of the month 11:30 – 1:30

Knitting Group

Crafting together has helped us build relationships and support one another. We know the importance of our work in caring for community and deepening our practice of loving-kindness.

Our current ongoing project is making prayer shawls for the clergy to give to a parishioner in a time of grief or celebration. Those who want to work on personal knitting projects are welcome to join us as well. All skill levels are welcome! We have several skilled people who enjoy teaching others.

Coordinator: Sue Abbott
When: Every 1st and 3rd Thursday from 12:30 to 2 pm at the cathedral

Parenting Groups

The Director of Christian Formation, Tina Clark, hosts two parent group offerings through Saint John’s Cathedral.

Faithful Families meets once a month on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

Parents of Very Young Children meets weekly on Tuesdays in the Library from 9:30 to 11 am.

More information on both groups is here.

60+ Group

Just as Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch,” we understand Jesus calls us to go deeper into our spiritual lives and deeper into community. The 60+ Group is a place to build community with people in similar life stages, and share the spiritual journey together.

Coordinator: Georgie Brooks-Myrtle
When: The group meets monthly on the second Thursday or Friday of the month. Please email Georgie at for more information.

Sitting in Stillness: A Contemplative Prayer Group

Opening our hearts to the presence of God is a practice that supports our lived faith and well-being. Being silent and still in prayer together, regardless of the practice you are engaging in, deepens your spiritual connection with God and one another. These Sunday gatherings will be especially suited for folks beginning their own practice and looking to deepen their existing practice.

Each week we begin with five minutes in silence and stillness followed by sharing on a topic of prayer and prayer life and we end with a longer sitting period. You are welcome to join for all, or if your practice is still working up to longer sitting we have space for walking meditation, or you may step away after discussions.

Coordinator: Rev. Amy Newell-Large
When: The first and third Sundays of the month from 9:15 to 10:15 am; Room 200

Stargazers: A Widows Group

Stargazers is a support group for women who have lost their spouse or significant other through death. We meet monthly in a comfortable social setting to give widows an opportunity to share experiences, learn from one another and others, and build community as friends in faith.

Coordinator: Alexis Hertel and Susie Jorgenson
When: The second Sunday of each month at 9 am in Room 107.
