Dr. Michael Boney, Director of Music
Michael Boney is an established organist and choral conductor who has been featured in numerous performing arts series in the United States and the United Kingdom including Truro, Wells, Portsmouth, and Canterbury Cathedrals (United Kingdom); the Cathedral of St. Philip (Atlanta, GA), First Presbyterian Church (Wilmington, NC), St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (Greenville, NC), and St. Michael’s Cathedral (Boise, ID).
Michael earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Wesley Theological seminary and his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from East Carolina University. He studied organ with world-renowned organist Dr. Janette Fishell and choral conducting with Dr. Rhonda Fleming and Dr. Daniel Bara.
Prior to his appointment at Saint John’s Cathedral, Michael served as Director of Music and Organist at St. Michael’s Cathedral, Boise, and Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis where he led vibrant music ministries for children, adults, and professional staff singers. Michael also serves on the Standing Commission for Liturgy and Music for the Episcopal Church. At Saint John’s, Michael conducts the Cathedral Choir, Vicars Choral, Cathedral Choristers, serves as organist, and participates in the musical life of the Diocese of Colorado.

Joseph O'Berry, Associate Director of Music
Joseph O’Berry came to Saint John’s Cathedral in September 2019 after completing a year of Interim ministry at Epiphany Parish of Seattle and Christ Church Cathedral, Springfield, Massachusetts, respectively. At Saint John’s, Joseph administers the music department, trains the novice choristers, accompanies the Cathedral Choirs, and shares in service playing with the Director of Music.
The 21st North American in history to hold a post as Organ Scholar at a British Cathedral, Joseph lived in England and worked at Blackburn Cathedral (2014-2015) and Truro Cathedral in England (2015-2016). While in England, he participated in nearly 800 services and dozens of concerts with both Blackburn and Truro Cathedral Choirs. He shared responsibilities in playing the daily offices of Choral Evensong/Eucharist, training the probationer boys, conducting the Cathedral Choirs, and participating fully in the administration of the music departments which included Cathedral Music Outreach. Joseph is a featured organist on the Priory Records Label (the largest producer of church music in the United Kingdom) for Blackburn Cathedral Choir’s newest CD entitled Natus: Music for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany.
Preceding his work in England, Joseph lived in Atlanta, GA and was Director of Music at Holy Trinity Parish, Chapel Organist for the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, and he sang with the professional Schola at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip.
Joseph studied organ performance under the influence of the late Robert Parris, with secondary emphasis in early music and collaborative piano at The Townsend School of Music at Mercer University. He is a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists and has performed as a solo and collaborative recitalist throughout the United States, Canada, England, and Australia.
