Interim Dean Search

On January 31, our tenth dean, The Very Reverend Richard Lawson, was elected the thirteenth Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Alabama. With thanksgiving for Dean Lawson’s nine-year tenure and with excitement for the future of Saint John’s Cathedral, our vestry, in conversation with Bishop Kym Lucas and The Reverend Canon Vanessa Stickler Glass, have begun the search for an Interim Dean to guide Saint John’s as we call our next dean.

The Interim Dean fully participates as a preacher, teacher and pastor in daily and Sunday worship. As the senior cleric of the Cathedral, the Interim Dean oversees the Cathedral’s ministries, including worship and preaching, pastoral care, formation and community engagement, and is responsible for the stewardship of the congregation’s financial life and property in partnership with the Vestry and key committees.

It is essential that the Interim Dean is able to lead collaborative decision-making with Cathedral staff and lay leadership. The Interim Dean should be Christ-centered and adhere to the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Episcopal Church. Along with the Canon for Transitions in the Episcopal Church in Colorado and in conjunction with the Vestry, the Interim Dean will play an important role in efficiently shepherding the cathedral to an inspiring call of its 11th Dean and Rector.

The vestry is seeking nominations for volunteers to assist with the process to select our 11th Dean. 

We are hoping to identify volunteers to support the profile process to discern the qualities the parish seeks in our next Dean; the interview process to identify final candidates; hospitality and logistics for travel, events and social gatherings for candidates; connection to celebrate and integrate our new Dean into parish life; and other volunteer capacities.

Nominations can be submitted using our online form or by completing a form available at the Welcome Center. Please complete all nominations no later than March 28th.
