A pipe organ to serve music needs while the Platt Rogers organ is in renovation

Saint John's Cathedral is known around the world for the quality of its music program. A cornerstone of that program is the Platt Rogers Memorial Organ. When the organ is returned to us in 2011 after it has renovated, it will sound as good as it did on the first day it was played in 1937 and it will continue to serve the mission and ministry of Saint John's for decades to come.

In the meantime, we must make provisions for music at services, weddings, funerals and other events in the Cathedral. The Organ Task Force, a group of volunteers who advise the Vestry on matters related to our organs and service music, has evaluated several options for music while the Platt Rogers Organ is being restored. After weighing the options, the Organ Task Force recommended the acquisition of a small pipe organ to be placed at the back of the nave.

Our new pipe organ -- an E. & G.G. Hook Organ built in 1869 -- arrived in Denver at the end of May.

When the Platt Rogers Organ returns to us, the interim organ will be dismantled and shipped to a new home. We have already begun negotiations for the sale of the interim organ to another church. While we will not recover the entire cost of the organ, its shipping, restoration and installation, we will reduce the Cathedral's cost for the interim organ as much as possible.

SAINT JOHNs IS GOING GREEN

A Resolution for Environment Stewardship for The Cathedral Church of Saint John's in the Wilderness, a Parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado

Whereas: God declares the whole of creation to be "very good," and

Whereas: the earth and all of its living creatures have value in and of themselves, and

Whereas: we are called to care for an earth where all living beings are bound together in countless ecological communities of life, and where God has made everything interdependent, and

Whereas: the earth now suffers from rapid extinction of species; pollution and depletion of air, water, forests, and soils; lack of access to safe water for over 1 billion people; and the severe threat of global warming, and

Whereas: our daily choices in a consumer-driven, fossil fuel-dependent society have far-reaching consequences and can fuel environmental degradation and poverty in other parts of the world, and

Whereas: the poor suffer disproportionately from environmental degradation and the consequences of global warming, and it is they whom Jesus taught us especially to care for, and
Whereas: we recognize our moral and spiritual obligation to future generations who will inherit the earth, and

Whereas: we ask God to: "Give us wisdom and reverence so to use the resources of nature, that no one may suffer from our abuse of them, and that generations yet to come may continue to praise you for your bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord," and

Whereas: our mission "to know Christ and to make Christ known" and our call to love God and our neighbor are inseparable from the call to honor that which God has created, and

Whereas: our church buildings, grounds, and related activities are outward and visible signs of our inward and spiritual grace of commitment to God's purposes in harmony with all Creation,

Therefore be it resolved that with prayerful consideration about the impact of our actions on our Earth home, the staff and membership of the Cathedral Church of St. John's in the Wilderness engage in actions concerning our buildings, grounds, and cultural activities that support our responsibility to the environment.

Saint John's Green Team

The Saint John's Green Team was formed in 2006, resolved to heed God's call for us to be faithful stewards of creation. We meet about once a month, and we welcome new people. Please contact Shelly Smith or Kris Stoever for more information.

Over the past two years, we have:
--presented a draft Environmental Stewardship Resolution to the Ministry Leadership Council and the Vestry. (This resolution was passed by the Vestry in April 2010)
--worked to secure an energy audit at Cathedral buildings, also helping parishioners with their own home audits.
--suggested readings and liturgy for a "Season of Creation" at the Wilderness service.
--organized two electronic recycling drives in collaboration with the nonprofit Tech for All.
--promoted the use of local and sustainably-grown foods at the Cathedral.
--proposed improvements to the Cathedral wastestream, including a stronger paper/plastics recycling regime.
--researched and promoted the possibility of solar-energy savings.
--worked for the provision of biodegradable products for key Cathedral events.
