Worship

At the center of the life and purpose of Saint John's Cathedral is the worship of God. Each year there are well over one thousand services here, and each is an opportunity to meet God, to grow in the knowledge of God, to discover more of God's love for us, and to be strengthened as a Christian community as we live our lives in a challenging and complex world.

There are three core patterns of prayer central to the Christian life:

The first is the Holy Eucharist. Some call this the Mass, others Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper. Through the visible signs of bread and wine, we encounter the real presence of Christ and are strengthened to be the Light of Christ in the world. The Holy Eucharist is the primary act of worship on Sundays and other Holy Days. In addition at the Cathedral, there is a Eucharist each weekday evening.

Our worship is expressed in a variety of styles, ranging from quiet and reflective to festive and celebratory. For instance, the 9 am Sunday Eucharist (10am in the summer months) uses contemporary and inclusive language, and has a particular emphasis on children's participation; whereas the 11:15 am Sunday Eucharist (September 14, 2008 - May 17, 2009) uses traditional language.

The second, core pattern of Christian prayer is the Daily Office of Morning and Evening Prayer. In these prayers, we join with the Church throughout the world in a continuous offering of praise and thanks to God. We participate in this work by a daily discipline of readings, psalms and prayers. At the Cathedral, the Daily Office of Morning and Evening Prayer is said each weekday in Saint Martin's Chapel.

The third pattern is a practice of personal devotion. These forms of prayer vary widely from person to person. Some may find centering prayer or meditation to be important. Others prefer a prayerful walk, Bible study, writing in a journal, singing, etc. Click here to learn more about the many ways to pray.

Come and join us in this rich tradition of liturgy and prayer.

Prayer boxes available throughout Cathedral

Prayer boxes, together with prayer request forms, can be found outside Saint Martin's Chapel, in the Welcome Center and in the Narthex.
The boxes are locked so that the person making a request will have privacy.
The Daughters of the King check the prayer boxes regularly and distribute the requests to clergy.
