Book of Common Prayer
The Book of Common Prayer is one of the major works of English literature. Since its introduction in the mid-1500's it has exerted enormous influence on the religious and literary lives of all who speak the English language. The Book of Common Prayer has evolved through a number of editions, not only in England where it originated, but in all the places where the various Churches of the Anglican Communion are now active.
The Episcopal Church in the United States of America first published its own edition of The Book of Common Prayer in 1789, declaring it to be "The Liturgy of this Church." Its full title is: A Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church.
In subsequent years it was revised, culminating in the most recent edition in 1979. It is our common prayer, as found in the Prayer Book, which unites us as Episcopalians.
